Texan. Trailblazer. Total Nobody. Daughter of Immigrants. 100% Silky.
Native Houstonian and daughter of working class Indian immigrants, Silky Joshi Malik was the first woman to run for the U.S. House of Representatives in Texas’ 2nd Congressional District. Silky’s first book, The Total Nobody Who Ran for Office and Lost-ish, captures memories of her time on the campaign trail, providing lessons to anyone trying to find their voice in the world of politics. Prior to running, Silky worked in health education and cancer research at MD Anderson Cancer Center, leading community outreach programs at LBJ Hospital. She was also an Associate Teacher for the Houston Independent School District.
In 2014, Silky taught social sciences at an International School in Malaysia and served as the Charity Events coordinator for one of Malaysia’s largest Women’s charitable organizations. She holds a dual bachelor’s degree in sociology and psychology from the University of Houston, and a master’s degree in business administration from West Texas A&M.
She co-hosts KPFT’s weekly talk radio show, Coming to America, which explores the topic of immigration and other issues relevant to Houstonians.
Silky and her husband Imran met at Dulles High School. They live in the Montrose neighborhood with their dogs, Athena and Atlas.
Stay tuned for her podcast coming in 2021, American Auntie, where she explores the variety of experiences of first generation Desi-American immigrants.
